Children aged 8–10 often struggle to stay engaged with traditional learning methods, leading to a lack of curiosity and foundational understanding of the world around them. Parents face challenges in finding tools that effectively combine education with interactive, rewarding experiences that align with their children’s interests and motivations.
This gap is an opportunity to create a platform that leverages interactive stories, games, and a digital reward system, empowering children to learn actively while maintaining high levels of engagement. By addressing this need, we aim to make learning enjoyable, foster curiosity, and encourage consistent educational progress.
This platform bridges the gap between fun and education, making learning an engaging journey for both kids and their parents.
Learning what is being taught
After consolidating data from multiple llm sources to validate research, I found positives and negatives of our educational boards in India.

Apart from teaching just english, math, evs and regional language, I plan to teach kids value of resilience, patience, hard work by incentivising learning assessment with redeeemable rewards.
Competitor analysis
EduJoy stands out by blending story-driven learning with real-world incentives, fostering both engagement and retention—a unique combination among competitors.

Key Insights and Differentiation Strategy:
- Khan Academy Kids excels in breadth and accessibility, making it a strong contender for general education.
- Prodigy Math Game is ideal for math-focused learning through gamification.
- Duolingo Kids leads in language learning but could expand subject coverage.
- Epic! is perfect for reading but lacks the interactive elements of competitors.
Differentiation Strategy for our App:
- Focus on interactive storytelling and problem-solving activities to blend gamification and educational content effectively.
- Prioritize personalized learning paths to cater to different skill levels.
- Ensure full WCAG compliance and offer unique accessibility options like voice commands or AR elements.
- Create a reward system that combines game-like features (points, badges) with tangible achievements (certificates).
Understanding users

Theme selection
Why LEGO? LEGO has been an iconic symbol of creativity and problem-solving, fostering imagination and learning through play. As one of my favorite childhood toys, it’s the perfect theme for this educational app for several reasons:
Creativity: LEGO inspires imagination and aligns with the app’s modular and engaging learning approach.
Universal Appeal: It resonates with diverse learners and parents across cultures.
Problem-Solving: Like building LEGO, the app encourages planning, critical thinking, and exploration.
Personal Connection: My fondness for LEGO reflects the joy and accomplishment I hope to bring to users.
Gamification Fit: LEGO’s playful nature complements the app’s rewards system, motivating kids to “build” their knowledge.

Design system

Plan
Building on my research, I addressed the core needs of engaging and effective learning for kids:
Story-Driven Learning:
Lessons are designed to connect visually and auditorily through storytelling, helping kids grasp concepts effortlessly.
Interactive Knowledge Retention:
Fun questionnaires and quizzes are placed between lessons to reinforce learning and ensure retention in an enjoyable manner.
Incentivized Progress:
Introducing an in-app currency tied to real-world rewards motivates kids to engage with lessons. Parents can set a budget based on their comfort, and the system automatically allocates it proportionally to stars required for the week.
Levelups:
As children advance, the star requirements increase, ensuring consistent challenges and sustained motivation through a dynamic leveling-up system.
This holistic approach fosters curiosity, retention, and consistency while keeping both kids and parents involved in the learning journey.

Final designs
Visualize the child’s progress from onboarding to rewards with intuitive flowcharts or icons, highlighting key milestones like completing lessons, earning stars, and parent verification.

Home
On logging in to the app, child is greeted by our avatar for first time, and elements are very self explanatory as well, they can see their live status, on clicking on help avatar will explain walkthrough again and also option to go to help page.
Lessons and star status will be shown upfront, stars are our currency. Amount of money pledged will be divided into number of stars required for week. So if child gets more rewards, they will be incentivised to learn more.
Usability wise, whenever sections are hidden, number of sections are shown and child can either slide to view more or click on arrow to show more. So even if someone is using a screen reader, it is user friendly for them.
Subject : Maths
Once subject is selected, for each subject entire subject is divided into interactive classes. Based on performance and time, they can get 3 stars.

Class
Class structure is simple, for teaching concepts, we will go with prerecorded lessons and a mix of interactive questions in between. If wrong answer is choosen, life/heart is lost. If more time is spent, avatar will come and ask, if help is needed.
If help is required, we will circle back to prerecorded classes.
On successful completion of class, 3 stars will be given, and unless accuracy falls below 20%, they will be allowed to continue to next lesson, else retry option will be given
Rewards
For rewards system, we are showing different metrics by which Childs progress can be tracked. In future, we can promote them based on learning ability.
They can choose to redeem rewards now or keep learning.
On clicking “Redeem”, parents will enter passcode or biometrics based on configuration and then accumulated stars will reset so that they can collect stars again.

Conclusion
Working on this educational platform has been a refreshing and rewarding experience. Designing for kids has been both fun and insightful, and the research conducted will continue to guide me in future projects. If such a platform had existed when I was younger, I would have been drawn to the incentives, which might have motivated me to study harder and learn more in a fun and engaging way, rather than through rote memorization.
Looking ahead, the app will introduce a leveling-up feature in future updates, where the star requirement increases as children advance through levels. This will ensure a progressive challenge, keeping them motivated to learn and grow.
With EduJoy, learning becomes a joyful adventure, inspiring kids to grow, achieve, and build a brighter future, one step at a time.
What’s Next?
I plan to complete a full math module on numbers and conduct usability tests with young learners. This will help identify and address any overlooked issues, ensuring an engaging and effective learning experience.
